We were founded on April 16, 1936 by a group of educators from the Battle Creek School System as the Battle Creek Teachers Association Credit Union. Our original field of membership was limited to teachers, principals, supervisors and superintendents of the Battle Creek School System. At the end of the first year of operation, there were 79 members, 24 borrowers and assets of $1,861.59.
In 1958, our charter was amended to expand our field of membership to include employees of all public schools in Calhoun County, Bellevue Township and Climax Community Schools; and our name was changed to School Employees Credit Union.
In 1962, the Credit Union achieved the milestone of $1 million in assets; only three years after reaching the half million dollar mark in 1959. In the year 1972, we reached the $5 million mark in assets and our new office on Riverside Drive was completed.
Through the years, our charter was amended several times to include educationally related groups in various geographical areas, as well as educational organizations and retirees.
On December 1, 1999 our name was changed to United Educational Credit Union to better represent our field of membership/community charter. Many years later, on January 1, 2016, the name was again changed, to BlueOx Credit Union.
The BlueOx name is a nod to the Midwestern folklore tales of Paul Bunyan and Babe. The character traits represented in the tales strongly represent our members, our Credit Union, our local community and our state. Oxen are known for the qualities of hard-work, strength, perseverance, and more. They are sure-footed and powerful. These are all great qualities, which are reflected in our educational membership base, as well as how our local community and state made it through the rough economy we endured during the Great Recession years of 2007-2009 (which actually took a little longer for Michigan to recover). Additionally, Paul Bunyan and Babe are bold, bigger-than-life, and represent values such as loyalty and friendship. These are all characteristics that embody our Credit Union.
Less than a year later, BlueOx Credit Union welcomed the merger of United VIP Credit Union members on October 1, 2016, adding almost 2,000 members and $15.5 million in assets to BlueOx Credit Union. United VIP Credit Union was originally chartered June 4, 1964 as LTV Michigan Federal Credit Union, a spin-off from LTV Federal Credit Union in Dallas, Texas serving LTV Corporation employees in Michigan. UVIP went through several name changes over the years, becoming United VIP Credit Union on June 6, 2000.
On January 1, 2018, Jackson Community Federal Credit Union members became part of the BlueOx Credit Union family, adding 4,877 new members and nearly $29.2 million in assets. Jackson Community Federal Credit Union was originally chartered on December 3, 1951 as Hayes industries Employees Federal Credit Union. Following several name changes and mergers, the name was changed to Jackson Community Federal Credit Union in June of 2007, serving all who lived, worked or worshipped in Jackson County.
On April 1, 2018, 1,042 members of the Tower Family Credit Union in Kalamazoo were welcomed into the BlueOx family, adding $8.5 in assets. Tower Family Credit Union, founded as the Kalamazoo State Hospital Employees Credit Union, was one of the first credit unions established in the state on April 28, 1928, to serve the needs of the hospital employees and their families. The name was changed to Tower Family Credit Union in 1996 when it was relocated from the state hospital grounds to Stadium Drive. The name was chosen by the membership to represent the landmark water tower located on the hospital grounds and the deep sense of family relationship felt by our members.
